My Adventures in Technology - Moodle

I was just exploring the Moodle website and I really do not get what it is. I signed up as a guest which allowed me to explore the tool without signing up. Does a person use Moodle so they can design an online course or is it so they can access lessons and units that other people have designed or both? I searched for different courses in the search bar and really could not find anything. I only spent 15 minutes on the site because I found it too confusing. Here is the link to Moodle: http://moodle.org/ .

  1. I found the same observation of Moodle. I tried to check it out because we have heard so much about it and I was kind of disappointed.I kept thinking to myself that maybe I would appreciate it more if I was a highschool educator. I don't know, but I definatly agree with your observation.

  2. It's both. Moodle is the technology that people use among their schools to facilitate online courses (and likewise, students use it to take the courses). But Moodle.org itself does not have courses (except for maybe demos on how to use Moodle). It's just a place where you can download the Moodle software to use at your school.

Each school runs Moodle from its own server (or uses a Moodle Partner, like Moodlerooms, to take care of all that stuff for them) -- it's basically a private Web site.

So, Moodle = online learning technology/software
Moodle.org = place where you download it

    Hope that helps :O)

  3. If you want to try moodle out, there is a sandbox where you can create content on Moodle.org. http://demo.moodle.org/

Additionally, there are hosting sites where you can get your own classroom for free: keytoschool.com, globalclassroom.us, ninehub.com, sqooltools.com among others.

If you want to check out content or courses that are already built (and available for download), moodlecommons.org is a great site.

Finally, to learn it, there are tutorials all over the web, one of the best sites is moodletutorials.org.

    best of luck!

  5. Megan, I have been experimenting with Moodle as a way of teaching a Career Ed. 7 class. At first glance, it is a difficult program to get your head around, but with a little experimentation it becomes much easier. I am using the creation of a class on Moodle as part of my Major digital project. If you are not planning on creating a class that can be accessed on line I would not spend time on it. However, with that said, the day is coming when schools will be asking teachers to create online classes; I think you are wise to at least check it out!
